In my quest to get to know the Pickering Lands intimately, my first question was where are they? You may be wondering the same. I decided to create a map to orient myself, and was surprised at how big the area is! The lands are in Pickering just outside of Toronto and total almost 20,000 ac.
In 2013 and 2015 the government transferred about half of these lands from Transport Canada to the Rouge National Urban Park, which is under Parks Canada. This was great news.
The remaining area still under Transport Canada, and the future of which is uncertain, is 9,600 ac. This is approximately 1/16th the size of Toronto!
