What if you had 9,000 acres of prime agricultural lands on your doorstep? You do!

The Pickering Lands, a rare ecosystem of prime growing lands adjacent to Rouge National Urban Park, are the traditional territory of the Mississauga's of Scugog Island First Nation, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. Expropriated by the federal government in 1972 for a second Toronto airport that was never built, they remain in limbo and at risk of industrial development. These ancestral lands are the heritage of all Canadians.

What if we protected them as precious growing lands - forever. What would you grow?

Abundance GTA offers a new lens through which to see the growing lands that surround the GTA, particularly the Pickering Lands.

 

We seek to engage city and rural residents in an ongoing dialogue about caring for urban and peri-urban agricultural lands to ensure we enjoy a future marked by food safety and local access. This dialogue is animated by the fact that good growing lands are a finite resource, that as citizens we must see that they are cared for and preserved in diverse, innovative ways to ensure their potential is nurtured and sustained.
